Ok, so today I found myself out of plant food, and I keep a lot of house plants, so I was wondering about the chances of recycling urine for this purpose.
The recommendation seems to be to dilute the urine between 10 and 20 times before watering the plants with it. Do you think it's a good substitute for an all purpose fertiliser?
I assumed that urine contained a large amount of nitrogen and not much else. In fact, when I looked it up I found that the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK) ratio is 12/1.1/3.3
It also contains a wide range of trace elements, so that just about makes it perfect plant food. Unfortunately it also contains salt.
However, if you dilute it thoroughly, use it fresh, and rinse the compost every few months, it should be better than a commercial fertiliser because it’s both free and organic.
What about the practicalities of collecting it though?
Good suggestion. I'll try anything once, and actually my indoor plants are looking much greener now, after their "treatment" last week.
